How much access should the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) have to American universities and taxpayer-funded research?

Chinese influence in higher education raises questions about foreign funding, academic freedom, research security, and the protection of American technology. In this segment from our Friday night livestream, Brandon examines how university partnerships and research sponsorships can give foreign governments access to sensitive expertise.

The episode covers:

• MI5’s warning about Chinese intelligence-linked research sponsorship
• Scrutiny of Duke University, Duke Kunshan, and foreign funding disclosures
• Hypersonic research and affiliations with Chinese defense institutions
• Confucius Institutes, institutional pressure, and academic self-censorship
• Cyberespionage campaigns targeting researchers through professional invitations
• Anthropic’s allegations of artificial intelligence (AI) model distillation and the Google trade-secrets case involving Linwei Ding

Published papers are only part of what research partnerships provide. Access to scientists, unpublished experiments, technical failures, and years of practical experience can help another country accelerate its own development.

That puts responsibility on university leaders, governing boards, and federal agencies to identify who ultimately funds a project, assess conflicting affiliations, and protect publicly supported research. What should happen when those safeguards fail?

Should American universities accept funding from adversarial governments? Share your view in the comments, including what restrictions you think should apply.

The U.S. military is expanding its presence along the Rio Grande, and what looks like a relatively small troop movement is part of a much larger story about border security, cartel activity, military authority, and American force allocation across multiple theaters.
In this segment from our Friday night livestream, we break down why roughly 500 additional U.S. troops are moving into the Rio Grande Valley, what Joint Task Force-Southern Border is actually doing, and how the Trump administration is using National Defense Areas to expand the military’s role along the southern border.

We also examine the legal framework behind the mission, including the Posse Comitatus Act, 10 U.S.C. §284, and the administration’s National Defense Area strategy, as well as the billions of dollars already being committed to border security, surveillance, counter-drone systems, barriers, aviation, and military support operations.

But the bigger question is what happens when these missions begin stacking on top of each other.

At the same time the Pentagon is sustaining thousands of troops along the southern border, the United States is reinforcing CENTCOM with additional naval and Marine forces amid continuing tensions with Iran and the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, military planners are also examining contingency options involving Cuba, including force requirements that could overlap with Army formations already committed to the border mission.

In this B.U.B., we cover:
• Why additional troops are moving into the Rio Grande Valley
• The growing cartel drone threat along the southern border
• How directed-energy weapons are being used against unmanned aircraft
• What Joint Task Force-Southern Border is actually tasked to accomplish
• How National Defense Areas change the military’s legal authorities
• What the border mission is costing American taxpayers
• Whether this could affect the 2026 midterms
• Why the Rio Grande deployment has little direct impact on Hormuz, but adds to broader Pentagon strain
• How 101st Airborne and Army Reserve forces factor into Cuba contingency planning
• What simultaneous NORTHCOM, CENTCOM, and SOUTHCOM demands could mean for U.S. readiness, logistics, rotations, and munitions

The United States has the force structure to handle these missions today. The real question is what happens if all of them begin demanding more resources at the same time.

Tonight on Watchfire, we break down American troops deploying to the Rio Grande and what their presence means for border security. Then a deep dive examining how the CCP exploits academic partnerships to gain access to American innovation, and why university leaders keep preserving those relationships. We follow the foreign funding into institutional influence and examine the cost of letting an adversary acquire knowledge America paid to develop. Then we turn to Hannah Arendt’s The Origins of Totalitarianism to explore why assimilation matters and how extremists exploit the need to belong. What are we asking newcomers to join when our own leaders won’t defend the civilization they’re inheriting?

Dr. Ruby Patterson, a planetary geologist who supported NASA’s Artemis and Curiosity missions and now leads her own space consulting firm, Crisium Group, joins us to talk about humanity’s next steps beyond Earth. We get into why the Moon’s south pole matters so much to America’s return and what has Ruby excited about its ancient impact basins. She explains how lunar water could fuel future space travel and what helium-3 could mean for energy on Earth, while walking us through the challenges of mining and building on the Moon. We also talk about private companies taking a bigger role in exploration, the competition in space, and how lunar resources could help us use the Moon as a launching point for deeper space exploration.

Can a marriage survive infidelity without becoming something entirely different? What does forgiveness restore, and what must be rebuilt through changed behavior?

In this Hearth segment from our Friday night livestream, we examine betrayal, loyalty, and repentance through one of the most moving scenes in Homer’s Odyssey: Odysseus returning home to his faithful dog, Argos, after twenty years away.

His return brings recognition, but it cannot return the years that passed. That encounter opens a deeper discussion about the consequences of our choices and the people who bear them.

We explore how an affair can begin with secrecy and a divided identity, why the desire to feel wanted can become more important than the person offering that attention, and what rebuilding trust requires beyond an apology.

The conversation also examines:
• Penelope’s fidelity and the unequal expectations placed on men and women in the Odyssey.
• Saint Augustine’s Confessions and the desire to be loved.
• The difference between judgment, remorse, and repentance.
• The Ship of Theseus and whether a changed relationship remains the same relationship.
• Christian forgiveness, accountability, and the limits of “forgive and forget.”

Can forgiveness lead to something better while acknowledging what was lost? Share your perspective in the comments.
